Startup Idea: Wildlife Monitoring App Using Old Smartphones

Summary for idea #1206
Startup idea to develop an app that turns old smartphones into high-tech game cameras. The app could help in wildlife conservation efforts by tracking game, listening for bird calls, and tracking migration. The data could be collected routinely and used for analysis and updates, possibly promoted and facilitated by a non-profit organization.

I hope this suffices as it is not so much related to my work, but I think it is a great idea. I spend allot of time hiking, camping, kayaking and such. I heard of an app someone was using to prevent deforestation in the rain forest. using old smart phones to listen for chainsaws. I think it would be cook if there was an app that could turn old smart phones into high tech game cameras. I mean the camera is already there, the light, and even a mic. This could be used to of course track game, but also listen for bird calls, track migration, etc. Maybe a nonprofit could promote it and get people to place the devices for them and routinely collect the data. Or the date could be collected via a system similar to how people find geocaches. There is of course the cell phone option as well, but that is costly and wont work in remote areas. The non profit could pay you for the service, updates, data analysis, and such.

The units could be contained in simply plexiglas containers and maybe even have a small solar charger. I can't say that I have, just kinda thought it up on the fly.
