Startup Idea: Track Defective Railcar Workflow

Startup idea to develop a system to streamline the tracking of defective railcars. The system will digitize the current paper-based approach and employ handheld satellite-linked devices that connect with a centralized database. The solution could also incorporate GPS tracking to monitor the location of the railcars throughout their repair journey.

I work for a short-line railroad. We have constant issues with tracking bad-ordered (defective) railcars, from point of inspection to point of repair to point of release. It is mostly done on paper, and via phone calls between responsible parties. A system by which BOs are entered in a handheld satellite-linked device that dumps into a centralized database would be incredibly helpful. The system would be even more helpful if it included portable GPS devices to install on BO cars to track their locations as they move through the repair workflow.
