Startup Idea: Advanced File Comparing and Backup System
I am a fish ecologist. I back up data files on multiple hard drives to ensure that no data will be lost even if there is some technological failure (which has unfortunately happened). I have used programs such as BeyondCompare which allow you to compare folders, identify discrepancies (different or newer versions of files), and copy or move files. However, I sometimes reorganize my files into a more organized folder structure on my primary hard drive, which then makes it more complicated to see which files are new and need to be backed up.
It would be nice to have a program that could compare folders (or systems of nested folders) of files and see if the files were there somewhere and identify which files are not there at all or have a newer version. It would be even better if the program could backup the discrepancies and reorganize into the new folder structure. I solve this program now my manually thinking or looking through files to determine which need to be copied. I either leave the folder structure in the old format on backups or have to manually update it.
