Startup Idea: Plant Identifier Mobile Application

Summary for idea #1834
Startup idea to develop a mobile application similar to Shazam, but for plants and flowers. Users can take a picture of a plant or flower, and the application matches it to a database to quickly provide information about that plant or flower (e.g., name, whether it's annual or perennial, if it's poisonous, etc.).

I am part of a walking group and we meet weekly and walk through town. Almost every week when we are walking, we come across a flower or plant that we can't identify and someone really likes. Often, we spend much of our time talking about what we think the flower or plant could be, or trying to look up pictures online while we are walking. We always wish we had an app similar to Shazam for music, which will identify a song while you're listening to it. The goal of this app would be to snap a picture of the flower or plant, and the app matches the photo to a database and quickly provides the answer or possible answers with information about that flower. We could go scrolling through pictures of "purple flowers" in google and not find exactly what looks right. The app could tell you the name, if it is annual or perennial, a poisonous plant (great for identifying poison ivy, etc. while hiking, since it doesn't always look the same) etc etc. One of our group members tried to find something like this in her App Store, but was unsuccessful. We don't really solve the problem now, other than guessing.
