Startup Idea: Rice Breeding Management Software

Startup idea to create a platform enabling rice breeders to track rice lines through various generations. Involves the tagging of initial seeds with unique identifiers (possibly barcodes) and detailed recording of the genes, species and progress of each line in a regularly updated database for efficient tracking and management.

I work for a rice breeding program, where we perform crosses between different rice lines to develop new, novel lines for marketing to farmers.

We need a platform with which to track specific lines through generations. For example: First, we perform a cross, which produces F1 (first generation) seed.

Then, that seed is planted in the greenhouse and produces F2 (second generation) seed. The seed collected from the F2 plant is F3 (third generation) seed.

This third generation seed is planted in the field, harvested, and selected through several generations, until it is either weeded out because it isn't desireable, or it keeps moving through the program if it looks good.

We need a way to label the F1 seed, including possibly a bar code, that we can track throughout each generation.

It needs to be assigned a unique number, and as each generation is grown, we can record that information with the number. Then, we can easily pull up a file on each unique number and see what the parents were, when the cross was done, and at what stage the line is at.
