Startup idea to develop a robust application to track, notify, and manage potential changes in product configuration items within large organizations, ensuring all stakeholders and team members are updated in real time about changes, cancellations and revisions.

I am a Configuration Management lead support for a extremely large organization. With that said I am a lead for a team that supports a new asset program. I work on database applications that are used to track potential changes to product's configuration items. Configuration Items are products or services related to systems, sub-systems and/or components of an asset. I won't provide the asset as I'm not sure what I'm allowed to tell. The problem that I am experiencing, along with everyone else, is that although it is somewhat easy to find a potential changes to an CI, it is equally "hard" to find out if the potential change has been cancelled, delayed, placed on hold, rescinded after approval, or revised. Therefore, you may have on your records that an Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) D-16-178 has been approved, but not aware that it was later disapproved, or progressed to D-16-178A. The A means that it is a revision to the change. In short, it would be extremely nice to have an application that has these types of attributes:

  • Able to provide the system, a list of several ECPs, and other change documents that are potential changes (along with their descriptions of changes) so anyone can see the "big" picture, the one stop shop.

  • The application provides all stakeholders with a notification to advise them of the change immediately.

  • The application provides all worker bees notification of what data bases need to be updated and tasking.

  • That the application is robust enough to eliminate other repositories that contain configuration management data.

In my opinion, if someone could perfect this effort, I think there is a bunch of money to be made. Configuration Management use to be the back burner of most functional areas of any organization. Well, that is moderately changing, therefore, might be a good idea to get on the wagon as soon as possible.
