Startup Idea: Livestock Tracking Application
I have sent one other idea before (mTurk ID: A1N8TKTLXV92QR) but this is a different idea. It accepted it so I assume it is OK? Please don’t reject before contracting me. It is another idea involving live stock.
I grew up on a ranch and later got a BSIE, MS Engineering Management and MSME degrees. I have spent a lot of time in IT functions as well. I also worked with the DoD on “blue force tracking.” This idea kind of came from this.
We ran anywhere from 100-150 head of cattle. One thing we had problems with was a few cows would get out and get into areas where we had crops or hay that was for bailing. The could cause a great deal of damage to the crops and to their own health (e.g., bloating).
It would have been nice to have a God’s-eye view of the ranch and little dot’s that represented the individual cows, the herd and their location. It would have been nice to be able to see the cattle that have “trespassed” onto areas they shouldn’t be. It would also be interested to note their “patterns” as herd animals. Cows have trails and are pretty routine about when to graze and when to water. Also, when a female cow is about to give birth, they separate from the herd and find privacy. This can be a problem is they have problems and need a vet. Cows also do this when they are near death.
One thing ranchers often do is put ear ID tags on a cow, clave or bull. A tracking device can be used with these tags. Further, the technology employed by UPS and FedEx to track where their vehicles are can be “borrowed.” Maps could come from this like Google Earth.
The app could have an extensive database back end on each member of the heard with information. One could click on each individual dot to get info such as name, id number, health other whatever the user wants to track (e.g., immunizations). Also, a rancher could search on a particular member of the heard (e.g., a cow that close to giving birth to a calve.) It would be nice if the app could be used in the field on a laptop, pad or smartphone.
The idea could work with pets, herds of horses, dairy cows, sheep etc.
