Startup Idea: Developing an EEG Mouse Cursor Headset for Law Enforcement

Summary for idea #2387
Startup idea to develop a software that interfaces with EEG devices like the Neurosky Mindwave, enabling law enforcement officers to control a mouse cursor and keyboard using their minds. The goal is to increase efficiency at crime scenes by allowing officers to interact with databases while staying focused on their surroundings.

SUBJECT: EEG Mouse Cursor Headset for Law Enforcement and Intel Analysts

Hello Justin,

I work in criminal justice and a lot of times our officers and technicians have difficulty both managing a crime scene and shifting through electronic record databases.

I know this might not be possible yet, but I watch a lot of science fiction so I am confident this technology is going to be possible very shortly. I think two or three developers who are sufficiently motivated and computer language proficient could create a software for mind reading/controlling of a mouse cursor with right and left click functionality by experimenting with the neurosky EEG mindwave device (https://store.neurosky.com/). Also, the device is used in a children's toy called the Star Wars Force Trainer (https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Science-Force-Trainer/dp/B001UZHASY/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8).

I am not sure if the science behind this particular commercially available EEG headset is reliable, but I imagine there are commercially available devices that would allow for extreme portability and accurate EEG interpretation and analysis capabilities for moving a cursor in three dimension time/space and possibly allowing for typing data through a mind-keyboard recognition system.

I think that officers would benefit by using a EEG headset to manage the flow of information at a crime scene. I personally believe that the time spent clicking and typing can be distracting, compromises public safety, and an inefficient use of time. A EEG mind reading device would allow an officer to become trained to simultaneously focus on the crime scene and record or search through databases using encrypted channels between the headset and the cloud or local computer device. The sooner these types of technologies are deployed in the field and experimented on, I believe we will be able to reduce street and violent crime significantly.

I can imagine a future where an officer wearing an EEG headset paired up with a robotic drone can allow an officer to safely examine a crime scene without compromising his or her safety. They can either manually fly the drone using their EEG headset or use autopilot. I think EEG and other non-invasive mind reading/controlling devices have the potential to change and improve law enforcement and public safety. I imagine that one day Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality could also be paired up with EEG mind reading/controlling devices to create a fully immersive and user friendly graphical user interface for manipulating information (e.g. Minority Report) movie.
