Startup Idea: Seafood Tracker and Direct Marketing System

Summary for idea #248
Startup idea to develop a robust software that tracks individual seafood items using a barcode system. The solution should also incorporate data such as GPS location where the seafood was caught, the date, time, and even water conditions. This information should be made available to consumers when they enter the barcode on a website, enhancing transparency and trust in the product source.

Hi there! I am a commercial salmon fisherman in Alaska. Most of the boats in our fleet sell to canneries and then to stores/consumers. Multiple hands along the way. I personally sell direct to a restaurant or to a consumer via overnight shipping, but direct from my fishing vessel.

That being said I am a direct marketer. I have a website that has been in the works for 3 years. I am not a web designer, lol. I don't know much about the integration but I have ideas and I know this one can be done.

I currently tag every fish with my personalized tags, each with an individual barcode on them that numbers them in series. This helps me keep track of how many fish I have for direct sales.

I also scan each barcode into a worksheet on my computer to track which fish goes in which box (where it gets shipped).

These are both above and beyond what anyone else in the fleet does. What I think would be a great idea, and have been personally wanting for some time, is the ability to scan the barcode as I tag the fish and have it also store some data at the point in time of that scan.

I would like it to track a gps location of exactly where it was caught, that could then be shown to the customer when they enter the barcode from their fish on my website (via google maps or whatever) I would also like it to gather whatever data is available at the time of the scan, i.e. date, time, water temp, water depth etc. (that may be a bit too much info but i think you get my drift) If this program were available to many more fishermen I think the ability for consumers to actually get to know the source of their seafood and know they are getting a real wild fish and not a farmed raised one would benefit both the fishermen and the consumers.

So to summarize.

A program that can track seafood via barcode scan or number entry that would be both helpful to the harvester and attractive to the consumer. If you do decide to do anything with this please let me know.

I have looked for something like this and have found a website or two that had the idea right, but i could tell that the barcode numbers were all just placed on a map.

Basically they had a similar idea and just made it up because they didn't have the program to actually do it.

I searched for fish tracker and similar but it just brings up sport fishermen programs/apps to keep track of where their "secret spots" are I cant solve this problem and currently don't offer the service because of it.
