Startup Idea: Color Matching App for Archaeologists

Summary for idea #2495
Startup idea to develop a color matching application for archaeologists to standardize soil color identification on site, replacing manual comparison to Munsell color books. The app should allow the user's camera to identify the closest soil color match under variable lighting conditions.

I'm a field archaeologist. One thing we do is match up soils to a standard color reference sheet as we excavate to describe the dirt we dig through. It's not always easy, and different people might give slightly different answers.

It would be great if there were an app where your camera could look at a sample of dirt and also look at the sheet in the same lighting conditions and tell you automatically which color matched up closest. Munsell color books go for $200 a piece easily, so this is something that people would be willing to pay a fair amount of money for. If it worked well I'd certainly pay at least $20 for it. For contract jobs with large groups that haven't worked together before, it would be a great way to standardize readings, and everyone could just have it on their own device. I'm mostly thinking about private sector work but I'd imagine that for academic archaeology it would be useful too.
