Startup Idea: Automated Task Simplification Software for Biologists

Summary for idea #2764
Startup idea to develop a software, which learns from the user's actions to reproduce simple, repetitive tasks such as renaming and filing pictures, reordering data in Excel CSV files, effectively reducing manual labor for a biologist.

I have no experience writing programs, so I have no Idea if something like this is possible or not, but I work as a biologist, and I waste half my time repeating the same steps over and over.

Example: I have to move pictures from one file to another, each picture in their own, new folder. Then I have to rename the folder So I name the new folder something like genus_species_0001. Then I go into the folder and rename the picture genus_species_0001_Domain04. Then I take another picture, and do the same, but the folder would be genus_species_0002, and the picture would be genus_species_0002_Domain04. I repeat this for 100 or so pictures.

This is just an example. Essentially what I am asking for is a program that can pick us super simple patterns just by watching me do it a few times, then repeat it on the rest of the files for me. I do similar things with excel files. Also I copy lots of small segments of csv files, and put them into a new order or new pattern into an excel file. I think all of this could be really sped up if somehow a program could figure out what I am doing, and do it for me. I have found some solutions to certain problems, such as renaming large numbers of files. I have not found anything that can figure out simple repeating tasks after I show it how, then repeat it for me.

Submitter: I'd love to know if something like this is possible, and if you decide to pursue it. Evan Lamb (view contact info)
