Startup Idea: Legislation Update Feature for Legal Document Generation Software
I am a lawyer working for a private law firm. On a daily basis, we use a software that generates legal documents, both simple and complex, upon answering a series of questions about the document. For example, in a child custody suit, one would be asked what county the case was filed in, what the name of the child(ren) is, who the parties to the lawsuit are, and so on and so forth.
In order to ensure that the software provides the latest updates in the ever changing laws, one question it often asks is "was this suit filed after (RELEVANT DATE)?" While answering this question may resolve major changes in the law, it does not take into account every case or piece of legislation which may have come to pass that year. Therefore, the lawyers are often left to manually revise the documents. It is a pain because we rely on these programs to do their best to generate a legally accurate document, however sometimes we have to virtually redo the document depending on which laws have changed. Additionally, paralegals and other staff often use this software, but do not have the expertise to know what legislative changes and updates have taken place, thereby allowing mistakes to easily slip through the cracks.
As an attorney in private practice, I would certainly pay the extra money to ensure that a monthly update of some sort took place to improve the accuracy of the software. Perhaps it could cross reference the state's legislative updates each month somehow, to ensure that any changes would be accounted for at least once a month.
