Startup Idea: Software solution for Creative Artist & Writer
I work from home in the creative arts industry as a musician and fiction writer. As a musician, I also have to do a fair amount of work at various out in the region, especially seasonally during the summer.
The biggest pain point that I have in my daily work at the moment is keeping everything organize in a clean, neat, and easy to use fashion. For music this issue manifests as keeping track of client information: owner names for venues, their contact information, when they're booking, etc. I've tried using Excel but have felt it was a bit clunky and not as intuitive as I would have liked. As a writer, I find this difficulty really comes up in terms of keeping track of the vast amount of files I deal with--though I do have a similar databasing issue keeping track of agents, whom I've contacted, when I sent out queries, etc.
I would pay for software that would help with these databasing issues, but it would have to be really good. I've had some limited success using Evernote, but found it worked really well for some tasks and not at all for others. If the pricepoint for the software was reasonable, I'd consider it.
A software that would be worth the investment for me would be one that has a really strong, and very easy to use/customizable databasing function. I'd be able to easily keep track of what venues or agents I've contacted, and be able to set reminders when a certain amount of time had passed. I'd also be able to copy in my word doc files for my writing, and organize them in a neat and easy fashion. Ideally, the software would have functionality for offline for security reasons, but would have an option to send some files online--a sort of selective syncing between devices, for only flagged items. This would be extremely important to me, and I would not put any of my writing files into a database without it. I have, mainly using the app store on my iPad, and then referring to my computer to see if a desktop version of given apps exists. Usually I look through organizational apps, or search with terms like "writing", "music", "booking", "database".
At the moment, I organize all writing files myself in files on my desktop. I do not put any into any softwares--though I have considered Scrivener. For keeping track of venue/agent submissions, I use both Evernote and a physical planner which I keep track of important dates in. Occasionally, I'll use Todo-ist as well.
