Startup Idea: Startup Idea for a Geospatial Imagery Tiling Software
I work in the geospatial industry for a small company of around 40 people, and handle the processing of imagery for hosting via our proprietary system. This includes georeferenced imagery provided by clients for us to host for their private usage.
One problem I commonly run into when handling client imagery is that it isn't tiled out to our specifications (it's commonly irregularly tiled, or tiled out to rectangles when we need squares, for example); a means of quickly setting up for tiling out imagery to our specifications (eg. a particular height and width in pixels, or a particular area respecting imagery resolution) that doesn't require loading it all simultaneously into a tool (and usually running out of memory or running into issues, even on a powerful computer) would make loading client imagery much easier. Yes. I've searched Google ('tiling geospatial imagery', 'retile aerial photography', et cetera), and questioned other people in the company.
We do have a means of tiling out the imagery, but it's either a convoluted process that involves creating a shapefile, or requires loading every tile at once into a tool and is very slow. We can't just point a tool at a directory for it.
