Reliable product to help find roommates

I recently moved to a new city and was looking for an online service to find a roommate since I didnt know anyone. Craigslist was not helpful at all, as there was no way to screen the people beforehand. There were two other sites but I found out they were scams because I kept getting emails from bots.

The UK has a great website called spareroom which everyone uses, I dont see why there isnt one like that in the US. There are many people who move to a new place and dont know anyone to room with. I tried but as described above couldnt find. For now I just got my own apartment.
