Startup Idea: Smartphone App for Efficient Newspaper Delivery

Summary for idea #3759
Startup idea to develop a Smartphone application that aids newspaper delivery personnel. The app would incorporate a map layout where users can tag subscribers' homes using GPS. It would aid replacements by providing a tagged course guide to follow in cases when regular staff are unavailable. The tags would also incorporate special delivery instructions for certain homes.

Okay, so I've worked for newspapers for years; local printers, DOW Jones, all kinds to be honest. Most everyone has regions and areas they work over and over, 6-7 days a week is the norm. You should be responsible and have backups, subs to cover you when your sick or need time off and all the usual life needs.

Most of the time these safeguards are not around, and someone has to cover a region they are not familiar with in the dead of night in bad weather. So a simple smartphone program could help this out a ton I'm sure, I've always wished we had something.

It would be as simple as a map layout, and people can tag the homes of subscribers via GPS and a button touch when they are physically at a location. You see people may have a street address but want a paper delivered in a special way; maybe they're elderly or paranoid about a wet paper. That way someone can run the course of their route, and tag each stop giving a substitute a real guide to follow instead of blindly running into the night... you know how hard it is to find house addresses at three in the morning?. Nothing really, I mean there are maps but that's still plodding along.
