Startup Idea: Unified Evidence Management System for Police Departments
I work for a local police department in the United States. We have an antiquated Computer Aided Dispatch system that we will be upgrading soon. Most places around me use a system known as Spillman. Despite all the advantages of this system I feel it lacks a few basic needs especially in the evidence portion of the system. I am currently charged with an evidence custodian position within the police department. That being said, evidence disposal is a major problem in a police department. Space is limited and there are many different times that evidence can be disposed of. Examples of which would be safekeeping holds vs major crime evidence which is a minimum of a five year hold. Timers for these articles of evidence applied to these items taken into custody would be beneficial. Also, the court systems computers and correction facility computers don't necessarily talk to my computer to let me know disposition of the court case or release from custody so I can return or destroy evidence related items once the case is completed. So my suggestion for software is to tie together court computers correction computers and police related evidence items so that timely removal of evidence can be performed with minimal effort as opposed to having to tie up police, court and correction personell to perform these basic tasks. Another idea in relation to this would be death records, in the event all suspects of an incident are deceased evidence in a case may be destroyed. Similar to what I am talking about before, absent of a manual search for this information this evidence will remain in the evidence locker indefinitely.
