Startup Idea: Traffic Prediction Software

Startup idea to develop a software that can predict traffic congestion and jams by dynamically recording the number of people using a road at a time. This data could provide consumers and businesses with potential travel route options and timing, thereby saving commute time.

I drive at least an hour every day for commuting to work, and I often run into traffic and congestion on the highway or various roads. If there were some sort of software that could predict traffic jams and congestion, I think that would save a lot of people a lot of time.

I think this software could be designed as an accessory to a maps app, and it could record how many people are using a road at a time, use this information to give percent chances of traffic jams and slow-downs that would occur on certain roads at certain times.

Even if the software didn't predict future traffic issues, I think data on traffic patterns would be very useful for individuals and companies. I have tried using google maps because it has features somewhat similar to my idea, however it has not been particularly helpful. I have not searched for other alternatives.
