Startup Idea: Retail Theft Prevention Software

Startup idea to develop a software that enables retail businesses to track individuals suspected of shoplifting, by checking if they have been previously charged for it, serving as a virtual police blotter for retailers. This would assist not only individual stores but also the whole retail industry in combating shrinkage.

I would like to track people who are suspected of theft. I work in retail and we have a real problem with shoplifting. If there was a way to check and see if someone we suspect is shoplifting has been charged with it before it would be a great way to help with our shrink. I don't know the legal implications of this, but i am sure that it should be public knowledge, like a police blotter for retail businesses. I think that if something like this were available it would help not only my store but every store that has problems with shoplifting. I have tried to set up a phone tree within our mall, so that if someone is suspected of shoplifting they would call the next store in the phone tree and they would call the next, etc. But a lot of the stores don't participate because of corporate policy.
